The process of organizing data in categories for its most effective and efficient use.

The classification process can be used to facilitate:

– Prioritization
– Execution of controls
– Alignment to a particular use case
Common types of classification include, but are not limited to:
– Security
– Privacy
– Confidentiality
– Access
– Data domain
Data can be classified according to multiple taxonomies.
