Data Element
Definition:
A unit of data that is considered in context to be indivisible. [ISO/IEC 2382:2015]
Commentary:
A data element is the realization of a business element in physical form.
Business elements are the documented requirements (or needs) for data as defined by one or more business processes.
Business elements cannot be directly inspected or measured in this form as they do not physically exist in a data field that allows the capture of a data value. The physical instance of a data element that is aligned to the business element allows the capture of data values and can be inspected or measured.
A data element may align to 0 or more business elements.
