Definition:

A tool to define a range of roles and responsibilities across the stakeholders of a process.

Commentary:

R = Responsible – execution of activity
A = Accountable – liable for the activity
C = Consulted – input to the activity
I = Informed – notified of the activity

There are other versions that introduce additional accountability categories.
